Sharpie and the self-expressing life

A new TV ad by Sharpie asks a simple question: what would life be like without self-expression? Maybe a better question is this: at what point in our cultural evolution did self-expression become such a big part of our lives? Sharpies were originally reserved for architects, advertisers, businesspeople, artists… specialists, in other words, often in creative fields. “There’d be no purpose. No passion. No putting it out there for everyone to see.”
